What is Coaching?
Coaching is a powerful, collaborative, future-focused co-partnership in which the coach supports and empowers the client in moving from an existing state or reality to a desired state or reality.
Coaching can happen one-on-one (face to face or via Zoom), or in a group or as a team. There are numerous coaching “niches” with coaches specializing in Business, Leadership, Executive Coaching, Health Coaching, Wealth Coaching, Life Coaching, and Transformational, Transpersonal or Spiritual Coaching.
The coach facilitates a process enabling the client to do, accomplish and become more than they would have done on their own by identifying limiting assumptions, shining a light on new and fresh perspectives, mirroring back, amplifying, sponsoring and challenging the client where necessary and holding the client accountable. This is done in a confidential and non-judgmental, powerful “growth container” which creates the opportunity for the client
* to extend awareness, explore, be curious and act on his/her own unique insights
* to learn to respond rather than react and make more empowered choices
* to think, observe, reflect, focus attention and make meaning
* to develop new, calibrated practices, set up action plans and check in with goals
* to learn to shift thinking patterns, mindsets, limiting self-beliefs and ways of being
* to check in with feelings, thoughts and practice greater mindfulness
* to foster greater resilience, brilliance and presence.
Ultimately, coaching is a “thinking partnership”. As an individual, leader or team begins to challenge and change their thinking, or shift their mindset, so they begin to change and influence the various systems around them. This is very exciting and deeply empowering.
Coaching is not mentoring, training, teaching, fixing, consulting, advising, being the expert, counselling or therapy.
The definition of the International Coach Federation (IFC)
“Professional coaching is an on-going relationship that helps people (and teams) produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organisations. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their relationships and enhance the quality of their lives. Coaching accelerates the client’s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. Coaching concentrates on where clients are now and what they are willing to do to get where they want to be in the future. Results are a matter of the client’s intentions, choices and actions, supported by the coach’s efforts and the application of the coaching process.”
What is the difference between Coaching and Therapy?
According to the International Coach Federation (ICF), the difference can be described as follows: “Coaching is forward moving and future focused. Therapy, on the other hand, deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or a relationship between two or more individuals. The focus is often on resolving difficulties arising from the past which hamper an individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with present life and work circumstances in more emotionally healthy ways. Therapy outcomes often include improved emotional/feeling states. While positive feelings/emotions may be a natural outcome of coaching, the primary focus is on creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals in one’s work or personal life. The emphasis in a coaching relationship is on action, accountability and follow through.”
What is the difference between Coaching and Mentoring?
In a mentoring relationship, the mentor plays far more of an advisory role. Often the mentor has had substantial experience in the business or field in which they are now mentoring. Based on their experience they are able to nurture the growth, development and expertise of the client in that particular field.
The coach, on the other hand, is there to support the client to find answers for themselves, whilst fully believing that the client is creative, resourceful and whole and able to find the solutions that work for them, as only they are the experts in their own lives. Coaches, as such, are catalysts; they are process facilitators of new learning and awareness, inspiring individuals to think and to stretch.
What results do you guarantee?
Re-calibration. A fresh take on reality. A new way of being. A sense of freedom. In short: transformation.
What makes you eligible to coach me?
I distill the answer to this question on the About Gwendolen page by summarizing the SIX main advantages that make me the real deal. Check it out.
Why do I need Spiritual Coaching?
Ultimately I can’t really answer this question for you. But, that you are asking this question points to a curiosity and openness to the spiritual, right? In these crazy times, there are impulses, without doubt, reaching “down” or “in” to us, from different or higher, invisible realms, impulses that we can learn to attune to. Many of us are hungry for something more substantial. The purely material no longer satisfies. Many of us are no longer settling for the status quo. We are are shifting, asking questions and awaking. We are looking at life through a different lens. This is not always easy. If this sounds like you, it is likely you are already on a spiritual path. Coaching can be an incredible support on this journey. I am deeply called to contribute, to take up my OWN spiritual leadership, grow my OWN spiritual maturity and therefore I am ready to be your coach if this is what you think you need.
If you really want the answer to this question feel free to book a Complimentary Clarity Call with me.
What is Spiritual Intelligence?
There is an Eastern parable that says LOVE is a bird with two wings. One wing is wisdom and the other wing is compassion. If either wing is broken the bird cannot fly. Cindy Wigglesworth, a leading expert in the field of spiritual intelligence, uses this in her definition, saying that “Spiritual Intelligence is the ability to behave with wisdom and compassion (which is love) while maintaining inner and outer peace regardless of the situation”. Over the years, I have asked this question to many, many people and have collated their responses. What I can tell you is that Spiritual Intelligence is intimately interconnected with other “lines” of intelligence. I truly believe cultivating this intelligence is one of the most valuable things we can do in these times. I believe, too, that it is the next frontier in leadership.
What is Spiritual Maturity, Soul Growth and Self-Leadership?
For now, think of this as personal development on a quantum level together with a steady growth of wisdom and understanding, self-awareness, inner strength and stability, plus healthy self-concepts. Look, its a big question and maybe not such a frequently asked question, come to think of it. If you are curious, why not come along to Alive Wire Wisdom Circle and hang out with us for a bit.
Do you have a personal / professional Code of Ethics?
Yes I do. My personal code of ethics is based on the high priority I place on integrity, humility and confidentiality together with my view of my client as whole, creative, resourceful, not flawed or needing to be fixed. I have access to Supervision and value this resource.
